Start With How You Actually Work, Not Where the Furniture Fits

Before anything else, think about what you do most during the day. Heavy on calls? You need the camera framing sorted before you place the desk. Running dual monitors? The layout needs to put both in a comfortable line of sight. Meeting clients in this room? The sightline from the door matters. The desk placement that solves those problems first is the right one — not the one that fits neatly in the corner.

The desk's position locks in everything downstream — light direction, camera backdrop, wall space for storage. A simple rule: face toward the room's primary light source, not directly into a window (glare on calls) and not with your back to the door (distracting, and a focus problem). Get the placement right before the desk arrives, not after.

Storage Goes Around the Desk — Not Across the Room

A file cabinet within arm's reach gets used. One across the room collects things you forgot about. Storage that's positioned away from the desk almost always becomes the place where things go to disappear.
