What Every Home Office Needs Before the First Day of Work
Share
There’s a version of the home office setup that can absorb months of planning and delay. And there’s the minimum version that needs to be in place before the first day of real work. The two are different, and knowing which is which saves a lot of time.
What You Actually Need on Day One
A desk surface at the right height. A chair that doesn’t hurt your back after two hours. A monitor at roughly eye level. An internet connection. Everything else — the bookcase, the file cabinet, the accent chair, the desk accessories — can arrive later without affecting your ability to do the work.
The One Thing Most People Forget
Cable management. Not because it matters for function — it doesn’t — but because it’s much easier to do before the desk is loaded with equipment than after. Ten minutes with a cable tray and some velcro ties before anything is plugged in saves an hour of untangling later.

What Can Wait
Accent pieces. Decorative storage. The perfect bookcase for the background. Art for the walls. None of these affect the quality of the work on day one. Get them right over time — but don’t let waiting for them delay the setup that actually matters. Start with the essentials.
