How to Choose the Right Desk Size for Your Room
Share
Too small and the desk constrains everything. Too large and it dominates the room, crowds the walkways, and makes the space feel more cramped than it did before the furniture arrived. Getting desk size right before purchase saves the time, cost, and frustration of returning something that weighs 200 pounds.
Start With the Room, Not the Desk
Measure the wall or corner where the desk will go. Then subtract clearance: at least 36 inches behind the chair for egress, 24 inches minimum on each open side. Whatever’s left after those subtractions is your available footprint — buy within it, not up to it.
Depth Matters as Much as Width
Most desk widths are obvious from the product listing. Depth — how far the desk extends from the wall toward you — is the dimension most people underestimate. A 30-inch-deep desk in a 10-foot room leaves 7 feet of usable depth. A 36-inch-deep desk leaves 6 feet and changes how the room feels to walk into.

Test It With Tape on the Floor
Before ordering, mark the desk’s footprint on the floor with painter’s tape and walk around it for a day. Sit at the taped outline with your chair. Open the imaginary drawers. Walk past it. This exercise catches fit problems that measurements alone miss — and it costs nothing. Browse desks in the right size range for your room.
